Finally, after much hard work and careful planning, the audience members settle in their seats. The house lights dim, and the magic begins. A vision is realized. Images are created. An idea is conveyed. Steps, phrases and motifs flow and morph. Movement and gestures interact with costumes, lights and sound. The dance takes the audience on a journey.
When the curtain falls, the theatre erupts in applause. The performers take their bows. If the audience really enjoyed the performance, the dancers may take several curtain calls to acknowledge the audience's appreciation. Sometimes the dancers, choreographer and creative collaborators may receive bouquets of flowers.
After changing and showering backstage in the dressing rooms, some of the dancers may come out into the lobby to meet friends and family. Often, there is a reception, either at the theatre or a nearby restaurant, where food and drinks are available and the audience can mingle with the performers.
Even if there isn't a reception, usually there is an event or party after the first or last performance of a work, to celebrate the success of the production and to mark the completion of the work.
