ArtsAlive.ca is a performing arts educational website produced by the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The goals of ArtsAlive.ca are:
ArtsAlive.ca was launched to the web in March 2002. It originally consisted of one module - ArtsAlive.ca Music. In the following four years additional modules were added, including ArtsAlive.ca English Theatre, ArtsAlive.ca French Theatre, ArstAlive.ca Dance. Content for these modules was produced in collaboration with the artistic programming departments of the NAC.
Through the generous support of the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canadian Culture Online Program NAC New Media was provided the opportunity in 2007 to add archival collections to ArtsAlive.ca. As a result, we have been able to digitize and make available to the public – in many cases for the very first time – stunning collections of costumes, posters and NAC Orchestra recordings. These collections are featured in: The Secret Life of Costumes, Persuading Presence: A Performing Arts Poster Archive, and NACmusicbox.ca.
In 2010 we will unveil a Canadian composers timeline that will feature 50+ NAC Orchestra archival performances of Canadian works.
ArtsAlive.ca is managed by the National Arts Centre New Media department (NAC New Media) and is made possible through the generous support of the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Canadian Culture Online program. TELUS is a founding sponsor of ArtsAlive.ca.
The National Arts Centre (in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) raised its curtains for the first time in 1969. Created by the Parliament of Canada as a Centennial project during the 1960s, the NAC has become Canada's foremost showcase for the performing arts.
Today, the NAC works with countless artists, both emerging and established, from across Canada and around the world, and collaborates with scores of other arts organizations across the country.
The NAC is strongly committed to being a leader and innovator in each of the performing arts fields in which it works - classical music, English theatre, French theatre, dance, variety, and community programming. It is at the forefront of youth and educational activities, supporting programmes for young and emerging artists and programmes for young audiences, and producing resources and study materials for teachers.
The NAC is the only multidisciplinary, bilingual performing arts centre in North America, and one of the largest in the world.
The National Arts Centre's New Media group is a small team creating online projects which help fulfill the NAC's national mandate. NAC New Media uses today's as well as tomorrow's technologies to engage, inform and entertain arts lovers across Canada and around the world.
NAC New Media works with the NAC's programming and education departments to create compelling content for the National Arts Centre's websites, among them:
Hexagon is the NAC's research and development project, which leverages next-generation broadband videoconferencing to extend the reach of the NAC's interactive outreach programmes. Tele-mentoring, education outreach, and audience development are explored using ultrafast networks like Canada's CA*net4 and Internet2 in the US.
NAC New Media acknowledges the tremendous support of the Department of Canadian Heritage and our technology partners the National Research Council.
